Hi. My name is Ira. I'm the creator of EZ Rec Rack.
How Did I Create The World's First One Person Loading Kayak Carrier?
In reflecting back on what got me to this place was a love of tinkering. I was never happy with the way things were and I always wanted to make something easier or better.
Innovation Out Of Necessity For Fishing & Kayaking Transportation
In my adult life nothing really changed, so when I started kayak fishing years ago and realized how hard it was to get a kayak up on top of the roof of the car or SUV, I knew there had to be a better way. I went to Harbor Freight and started to build a trailer, which I did, but a trailer wasn’t the perfect solution as you have to store them, they have parts that can go bad, tires that can have blowouts, plates to pay for, and challenges with parking them.
Where Can I Buy A Better Kayak Roof Top Carrier Online?
I continued looking for a better solution, so I scoured the internet looking for something that made my life a little easier. Nothing I found in that search seemed to hit the mark. I had this idea in my head and I thought I would just have to make something myself. It took a scheduled family trip to Florida to motivate me to get started.
The resort we booked didn’t allow trailers and I wanted to be able to take my kayak to do some fishing as I’m not really a fan of lying on the beach. My first stop was a trip to the local hardware store where I bought the materials I needed to start building the vision that I saw in my head, which was of a loading system that could easily be put on most SUV’s or vans. It also needed to be easily removable to be able to get in the garage.
Creating A Simple Roof Rack Kayak Loading System, That One Person Can Use
I wanted to be able to secure my kayak without crawling up on top of my truck. All the strapping needed to be done on the ground before the kayak went up. On February 1st of 2017, I started what would become the EZ Rec Rack. My wife must have had a sense this was something and with some encouragement from her, I began working on the rack in my garage.
What Is The EZ Rec Rack Kayak Loader Made Out Of?
By February 15th I had a working prototype. Because I was able to weld steel, the first prototype was made out of this material. I quickly realized this was too heavy and not salt water friendly. To hit the mark, it had to be something that was light enough to where it did not over load the cross bars by itself and could hold up to the elements. Powder coated aluminum was the solution and what they are made out of today.
Helping Outdoorsy People Like Myself Is Our Passion. Our Aim Is To Be The Industry Leader In Roof Top Carriers For Kayaks & More
I was advised to do a patent search, which I didn’t want to do as I was sure there was something in the world like this and I didn’t want to spend the money. The search showed that there was nothing like it! About 11 months later I had a US patent. Since then, I’ve been tweaking the rack to make it the perfect loading system. I am now ready to share it with the world in hopes to make others’ lives a little easier, just like mine.
